The "New" Abo Canyon - BNSF Transcon in NM
Author: Super_C

The BNSF Ownership Map of the Abo Canyon double-track project has new names for 7 locations.  From east to west they are: “Big Cut” between the US 60 overpass and MP 871; “Silver Cut” located west of Big Cut where the north and south tracks come together; “Mule Cut” at MP 871.5; “BLM Cut” at MP 871.7; “Blue Cut at MP 873”, “Blue Fill” between MP 873 and MP 874; and finally “Quarry” at MP 874 which is the former location of the overlook to the second bridge from the west end.

Great coverage and wonderful photos!  Thanks for sharing these.  I was not able to enjoy the canyon before it became off limits so I do love seeing what it's like in there.

Nice set.  Thanks for sharing.
Looking at the first several pics, I cannot  help but wonder why BNSF simply didn't widen the first cut a few more feet and had both mains running through the new cut,  I know, I know, money -- that's why.

Would it be possible to shoot at least the east and west ends of the canyon with a drone?  Or is public access so distant that even that is impossible?

The pictures are wonderful and help put the narrative in perspective.

It looks like there's a significant difference in elevation between the tracks.

Great set of photos. One small correction, I believe it is SLIVER not SILVER Canyon. That is what I understod we were told when I visited the canyon last month along with the former Project Engineer.
