Date of Last Train on Chula Vista, CA Street Running Track ?
Author: BurtNorton

Does anyone know the date the last train ran down the middle of "F" Street in Chula Vista? Better yet, does anyone have any photos they'd like to share of the same?  This trackage was sold/donated from SP to the MTDB,  who then turned around and leased the track to the Kyle Railways, then RailTex, and finally Genesee and Wyoming (SDIV).   The original track dates to approximately 1916.

Thanks
Burt

The street trackage in Chula Vista was know as the Chula Vista Branch in the SD&AE employee timetables and ran from Chula Vista Jct.
east on F St, took a jog to the south to a lemon packing plant at Fourth Ave and F St ( current location of the CVPD Station ) then continued
on to the SD&AE Chula Vista station at Center St and Third Ave where it turned south onto Third running down the middle of the street to
another lemon packing plant at Third and K St where the line ended ( current location of a BofA branch ). The branch is listed in SD&AE
employee TT #87 dated 9/26/54 but is gone by the time of the next TT #88 dated 11/4/62, my best guess is they ended service east of
Broadway sometime between 1958 and 1960. The city website says the right of way from Broadway east was turned over to the city in
the early 1960's and the track was paved over and is still in place as far east as Fourth Ave.
The trackage from Broadway west to the mainline remained in place as a tail track for the local to get across the main and I-5 to serve the
the remaining 3 customers which were Rohr Industries, SDG&E, and at the end of the former Coronado Branch the Salt Works
By most accounts the last time they used the line was in 2002 to deliver a car load of sand to the Nature Center. MTDB removed the diamonds
sometime between 2014 and 2016 and then last year in August 2019 they hired a contactor to tear the track on F St out from the mainline
to Broadway, one of the Lady board members of MTDB thought it was a liability and wanted it removed...they also removed the other street
trackage on Cleveland St in National City which was the north end of the Coronado Branch.

Correction: The Chula Vista depot was between West Madrona St and Parkway on Third Ave.
