Poppet Valve Gear on the S.P.

Does anybody know if the Southern Pacific (or Santa Fe, for that matter) ever experimented with poppet valve gear (like Caprotti, for example)?

You should have asked this question over on the Steam Railroading board (Steam & Excursion).  And,,,,,,,,,the answer is,,,,,,,,,,yes, someone probably knows.

Yes. The SP, UP, and the Santa Fe exprimented with these types of valve gear.

The AT&SF applied Franklin rotary cam poppet valve gear to 4-8-4 #3752.

Santa Fe 4-8-4 #3764 was built with Caprotti poppet valve gear, but was converted to Walschaerts valve gear in the early 1930's.
