Wreck!!!
Author: rrartist

Just heard a BNSF westbound hit a boulder north of Dubuque. Both mains are blocked. Leader is a Tier 4 Gevo, second motor is a FXE 70 ace on its side with cars derailed.

Per Facebook reports the wreck is across the river from the John Deere Plant at Dubuque. Sounds like close to Potosi.

North of Glen Haven there is road right above the tracks with Rock formations  above and I  remember correctly there were slide fences, wondered if they were still active.

That's one helluva chunk of rock laying there. No wonder there is stuff derailed all over the place.

That is a mess. I hope the spokeswoman was right and those autoracks were empty.

This is the second time in 6 months BNSF put one in the drink in this area. They had one close to Glen Haven, farther north than today's wreck, where an engine and some stacks got wet (no injuries in that one either!)

Interesting that that the lead loco made it down the track quite aways. Looks like the front truck might be off the rail.  Rock is mostly on the outer main and the train was on the inner main.  sideswipe maybe?   Empty racks might have piled up due to run-in?

I wonder if the slide hit the engine consist in the side rather than the train hit the slide head on?

Nasty, but glad no severe injuries.  Just looks like that rock was aiming for a drink, which I'm sure it will get soon.

Thankful that there were no injuries.  As an aside, I know of at least one railroad that, back in the day, would fire any employee that would refer to any mishap like this as a "wreck."  Any such incident, no matter how minor or major, was a "derailment."

That's like Elon Musk over at SpaceX. It wasn't a crash, it was a Rapid, Unplanned Disassembly!

Places I've worked, trains were in the ditch (except IHB, where they were in the mud) unless there was a collision with a train, in which case they were into each other.

The hook was also the wrecking outfit and the guy in charge of it was the wreckmaster.

The boulder that did the job.

Sort of like the understatement of a British military officer who called Dunkirk "a bit of unpleasantness."
