Derailment or setout railcar fire on the UP's GSL??
Author: rrman6

Following last evening's rain, high wind and golfball size hail storm in Edwards and Kiowa County Kansas, I woke up this morning to scanner communications from the Kiowa County Sheriff's.  It sounds like there is a rail car that had ignited (contents unknown) and it was located nearly one mile west of the Joy, KS elevator, between Mullinville and Greensburg.  At this moment more fire units are being called from Haviland, KS in the eastern portion of Kiowa Co.to assist.  I'm curious if there was a derailment near the Joy siding or a car that had been setout there early hours of this morning.

Where's the fire?  It doesn't look burned, just broken.

I thought GSL was the Great Salt Lake.
I am guessing that your use of GSL is the Golden State Line?  aka the old Rock Island?

Golden State Line (GSL) is the norm term used for the portion of what was once the Rock Island route connecting with the Tucumcari, NM SP's (Southern Pacific) to the west coast of California.  I live nearly 30 miles from the Joy location and being more concerned today with my local hail damage and working with damage adjusters, I didn't plan to drive the distance to seek the details of this fire and take a photo.  So sorry some here have become irritated of my questioned posting.  I paid my TO's subscription to use this site just as any others here.  If you're so offended, just click out and move on, just I do if not interested in a particular posting.  Hope you all have a better day!!

I believe the others are trying to tell you that the title of your post is
very disingenious.
The least you could do is to use OT (Off Topic) in the title.
Oh, and I really don't care that you "payed your money", big deal!

Dave

Have always heard this line referred to as the Golden State Route (GSR). I think you're the first person I've heard call it the Golden State Line.

Mr. Hall, it seems it's where and what former RI railroaders I've visited with in decades past.  Maybe the term, Rock Island Line had some affect at the moment with these men.  Consequently, all these years I've referred to it as the GSL, as I lived within a half mile or less of it for my first 27 years.  Now at age of 79 years I'm never too old to learn, therefore, my terminology will become the GSR hereafter.  Thanks again for assisting in my education process!

Thanks Dan, that answers my question.  I'm just now catching up with the recent TO's postings since mine.  Mr. Plank's photos and input from Mr. Reardon complete the story.  Again thanks for your offering here!
