Of all the AMTRAK diesel engines, these sound the best.  At low speed, while accelerating thru Oakland's Jack London Square, the deep and gutsy tones of the V-12 engines in these units vibrates windows and anything else nearby.   A real sonic treat for those who like to compare engine sounds.

I still remember that sound in the quite "early" morning hours next to Olive Junction in Orange, CA as the OCTA single commuter train ran empty from LA to Irvine.

That was pre Metrolink and it was an odd ball train, 1 P32, 4 CalTrain borrowed double deck cars and an Amfleet cab car.

Agreed! I always love when one of the Dash-8s substitutes as a cab car on my Capitol Corridor daily commute (well, pre-COVID). The throaty rumble is music to any railfans' ears.
