Ugly Southern Pacific Paint Scheme
Author: railroadbill

There was a paint scheme that S.P. tried on it's early (1960's?) passenger diesel locomotives that management squashed immediately.  It looked like an orange knuckle bandage on the front of a black locomotive.  Does anybody know what it was called and when it was tried out?

I think you are talking about the Halloween scheme?

Yep.  I think that's it!  Thanks.

Do you when it showed up?

Now that I know the name, I've found lots of info on it.  I totally forgot that our (Calif. State RR Museum) E9A #6051 was painted in that paint scheme at one time!

THAT's the exact photo that I was looking for !!  Thanks!
I had it at one point because I made a very tiny print of it on a little Dell inkless printer, but I lost the photo.

Please post a photo of SP 6051 (E-9) in "Halloween" paint.  (or any other SP E-9 in the Halloween paint).

I believe that is SP 6039.  SP 6024 was painted very similar but the orange "mask" were more like the standard SP wings with three "feathers" at the end.

Looking at my original 4000 dpi scan, I would support 6039.  The grain structure makes the numerals pretty vague, but the last numeral sure looks like a 9.

I think a PA is the only loco that could make that scheme tolerable.  Just curious as to what station that is?  I grew up back east on the LIRR but have been fascinated by all things SP (and California) since moving out to the Vegas valley 24 years ago.

This topic is reasonably well covered in Joe Strapac's book on Historic Southern Pacific Diesels --- Passenger Cab Units
