Western Railroad Discussion > Ugly Southern Pacific Paint SchemeDate: 07/07/20 16:16 Ugly Southern Pacific Paint Scheme Author: railroadbill There was a paint scheme that S.P. tried on it's early (1960's?) passenger diesel locomotives that management squashed immediately. It looked like an orange knuckle bandage on the front of a black locomotive. Does anybody know what it was called and when it was tried out?

Date: 07/07/20 16:25 Re: Ugly Southern Pacific Paint Scheme Author: railroadbill Yep. I think that's it! Thanks.
Do you when it showed up? Date: 07/07/20 16:33 Re: Ugly Southern Pacific Paint Scheme Author: railroadbill Now that I know the name, I've found lots of info on it. I totally forgot that our (Calif. State RR Museum) E9A #6051 was painted in that paint scheme at one time!

There is good info here. https://groups.io/g/Espee/topic/request_for_info_about_sp_f7/29628027?p=Created,,,20,1,0,0 Date: 07/07/20 17:11 Maybe this..... Author: jbwest Date: 07/07/20 17:21 Re: Maybe this..... Author: railroadbill THAT's the exact photo that I was looking for !! Thanks!
I had it at one point because I made a very tiny print of it on a little Dell inkless printer, but I lost the photo. Date: 07/07/20 17:21 Re: Ugly Southern Pacific Paint Scheme Author: xcsrm Please post a photo of SP 6051 (E-9) in "Halloween" paint. (or any other SP E-9 in the Halloween paint).

SP 6024 was painted very similar but the orange "mask" were more like the standard SP wings with three "feathers" at the end. Date: 07/07/20 17:43 Re: Maybe this..... Author: jbwest Looking at my original 4000 dpi scan, I would support 6039. The grain structure makes the numerals pretty vague, but the last numeral sure looks like a 9.

Author: stevelv I think a PA is the only loco that could make that scheme tolerable. Just curious as to what station that is? I grew up back east on the LIRR but have been fascinated by all things SP (and California) since moving out to the Vegas valley 24 years ago.
