Raton Line Ballast Train Tomorrow (8/4)
Author: rgzfan

Sitting at Trinidad tonight. Supposedly it will go over Raton Pass behind Amtrak #3. There are two batches of ballast cars. They're taking about half tomorrow and the rest some other day, I guess.

If I guess 50 car cuts for the four locomotives, how far off am I?

I tried to count the cars as I drove on I-25, but I couldn't pull it off. I estimate there are about 21 cars behind those four locomotives.

Thanks. Even for Raton, that should be plenty of power.

I wonder where the ballast will be used?

Someone I spoke with earlier in the day said it's headed for Glorieta pass. I don't know if that's accurate or not.

Good to see them keeping the track up! I suspect BNSF gave the train some extra power in case one broke down in the middle of nowhere. Or maybe some power has to be left with the work train while they go back and get the other cut.

Is this a unique special move?

Basically no non-Amtrak trains over Raton Pass normally, so, yes, it's pretty "unique."
