Melrose, NM depot demolished?
Author: howeld

I heard through the grape vine that BNSF razed the Melrose, NM depot.  Can anyone confirm.  I stopped to shoot it Aug 1st.  It was wide open with all kinds of BNSF VHS training tapes and other stuff inside.

Yes, it's true.

There were photos of the demolition in a Southwest Chief group on Facebook days ago.

It's always sad to hear of a railroad depot being razed.  Does anyone know if there was a campaign to save the building prior to its demise?  Also, how long had it been since it was used for maintenance of way or other BNSF endeavors?  Thanks.

The BNSF offered the depot to local officials for $1 many years ago with the condition it had to be moved away from the tracks.  Melrose only has a population of 651 at last count and that number has been falling for many years.  There just wasn't the money available to move it.  Then the question of what to do with it once it has been moved.  While it is a shame to lose any old depot at this point, having an old depot just wasn't something the community could afford.
