California to Chicago Intermodal Questions
Author: PRR_4859

Good Evening:

What is currently the fastest intermodal schedule to Chicago? I thought I remember reading several years ago that it was 40 hours, but not sure. I assume BNSF has the fastest schedules.

How about from the Oakland, CA area to Chicago? I would still think BNSF is fastest, but may be wrong.

Thank you in advance.

You sure about this?  BNSF's WSPNBY (Santa Fe's old 199) train continues to keep the UPS traffic that the UP cannot seem to get or keep.

BNSF only has rail ramps in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, and Stockton.  All other ramps were closed long ago.

UP has a Los Angeles, ICTF, City of Industry, Lathrop, and Oakland.

All loads have to be drayed to one of these ramps. None are close to the produce growing regions.  BNSF does run expedited trains out of Stockton and LA.

Also there's a ramp in Barstow. The Z-NBYWSP runs as hot as the old 199 and runs Bakersfield to Needles
long pool, single crew.

Do you know what the pay is for engineers on that long run?

Where does the ZNBYWSP originate?

Thank you for all of the responses.

For a while 2 years ago BNSF was loading domestic well cars at Oakland International Gateway. All I saw were JB Hunt boxes. Not many, but a few. I posted pix of these a while back: see https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,4631548,4632171#msg-4632171 . I'm not sure if that practice has continued or not. AFAIK, North Bay is UPS only. Most BNSF northern CA traffic is ramped at Stockton.

North Bay is owned by UPS and handles exclusively North Bay traffic.

I  believe the domestic boxes handled at OIG a couple of years ago were not commercial loads.
