Old ATSF GP7 still earning its keep
Author: srman

First off guys this is about 250 miles east of the Mississippi River however I don't know how to cross post from the eastern to the western boards. Sorry. I thought that more of you western board members
might enjoy seeing this 68 year locomotive still hard at work. Now this is Jeffersonville In. across the river from Louisville Ky. at the Clark Maritine Center a large industrial park located on the Ohio River.
Consolidated Grain and Barge owns MG Rail (don't ask me what MG stands for) I would imagine the G stands for grain just not sure about the M. Anyway MG Rail has about three GP20's however the one that I've been after for the past few weeks in good light is their GP7u 3833 ex. ATSF 2752 built in August 1952. Wednesday morning was the day as it worked a steel industry there. Since I live less than ten miles from the area I hope to catch it a few more times. BTW the unit is remote controled. Thanks for looking.

As requested here's the GP20's 2002 and 700. There is also a 2001.

Looks like the old MG cars logo from the UK, maybe the owner had a Midget back in the day...

Santa Fe equipped this unit as a slug mother when they chopnosed it into ATSF 1323.  MG apparently also has or had ex-BNSF slug 3963, cut down from Santa Fe's very first GP7 #2650.

Had to dig into my archives a little for the 3963 from December 12,2007. The very first Santa Fe GP7 now a slug working with the 2002 in Jeffersonville.

Good stuff, thanks for posting.  That 700 looks like a GP18 without dynamic brakes however.  Do you have a broadside of it?

This view of MG Rail 700 is from a high enough angle that you can see the rear set of radiators has a 36" fan and a 48" fan like a GP20 instead of a single 48" fan like a GP18:

The louver arrangement on the hood doors is also consistent with a GP20 rather than a GP18. MG Rail 700 was previously Columbia & Cowlitz 700, Arizona & California 2004, South East Coal Co. 2004 (acquired through Precision National, who also deturbocharged the unit), Union Pacific 471, and was built as Union Pacific GP20 701.
