Western Railroad Discussion > UP # 638 in Lagrande Oregon

Saw this unit today in Lagrande Oregon waiting to go east towards Boise. Does anyone have some history about this unit.

UPY 638 was MP 1638  blt. 9/79. From Withers Publishing 2007-2013 UP Roster.

And it's pulling some Hampton Lumber from over here in the Willamette Valley, from Portland + Western's Westsider.

Hampton Lumber is a large outfit; there's more than one place UP gets loads like that from... the local on the Chehalis cam in WA is also usually dragging some Hampton Lumber around which I believe goes East from Portland as well.

That is a very, very cool catch. I'd love to see what some talented modeler would do if they took this one on as a detailing/weathering job.

LIC55 (the UP local seen in the Chehalis cam) gets theirs at Napavine and takes them back to Longview to send them south. Yes, Hampton is a huge outfit with loadouts in several locations.
