Cajon's Horseshoe
Author: MacBeau

Between Pine Lodge and Alray the 1912-1913 second line over Cajon circumscribes a very nice horseshoe just past Mormon Rocks. Some early AT&SF public relations photos referenced this location as Alray. The locals know what you mean if you call it Davis Ranch, but Davis Ranch burned down (without falling over or sinking into the mud) some years ago. Then the triple tracking introduced CP Walker to the party at the upper end of the curve. My point being, this location could use a name. The short westbound mixed shown coming out of the bottom of the curve was part of yesterday's Cajon show.

Be of good cheer,
—Mac

Nice shot! Agree about the name, it's a mixture of Pine Lodge, Davis Ranch, Walker, Mormon Rocks and Milepost 60.

Hey dont forget Loony Ranch if you guys remember the Video Rails Tape on Cajon because of the fight between the landowners and railfans!

Alray siding was where I would occasionally see eastbound (uphill) freights get off the main line to let a faster passenger train pass, sometimes the Chief or sometimes one of the UP City trains.  The east switch was near the first tunnel.  The west end of the siding would have been somewhere near CP Walker.  I think this curve is a bit further west, eh?

I’ll second this observation, it really is a mix of all these names.

Yes, it is.  The best description I can give of its location is just above the Mormon Rocks.  And it's actually one of three "horseshoes" on Cajon.  Well, at one time there were three.  Sullivan's Curve is still close even after the lne relocation.  The third was at Summit, but that was eliminated
in the 1972 relocation.  And the best spot to shoot thihs one, as the photo shows, is "Stein's Hill."  Nice shot, Mac, thanks for posting.
