UP Derailment and Bridge Collapse Near Elkhart, Iowa
Author: Agent

A Union Pacific train derailed near Elkhart, Iowa about 5:30 this morning.  This would be on the former Rock Island Spine Line.  Intial reports say a small bridge south of Elkhart collasped as the train was going over it.  There have been no reported injuries so far.

Looks like every single car came off the tracks. The old SP reports would describe that as a 'general pile'.

+ the second link shows some cars left on the rail. Impressive.

It really makes you wonder with all the PSR cutbacks they've done.  Shareholders and company executives first and foremost.

I see the UP Bridge Replacement Program is still moving right along. How many major bridge collapse derailments has UP had in the past couple decades? Seems like dozens and dozens!

Does anybody know what kind of 'bridge' is involved ?

A span over field drainage could be a correctly called a bridge, so could a span over the Mississippi, not that the media has been known to use overly dramatic descriptions.
