Kansas Pacific crew changes/remaining depots/signals
Author: brc600

We've discussed this before. But, as of January 2021, where are things standing? Thanks for all responses.

Off the top of my head (and that's not saying much... ;^) the depots/stations remain in their original positions at Lawrence, Topeka, Manhattan, Abilene, Salina & Oakley. None are in RR use, and I may have missed 1 or 2 in between. The signal system is: CTC from Kansas City to St Marys, KS. ABS from St Marys to Salina, KS. Dark territory w/ "islands of CTC" in various locations between Salina and ???? Crew districts are: Kansas City ~ Salina. Salina ~ Sharon Springs. Sharon Springs ~ Denver. There is also a crew district based In Wichita, between Wichita & Salina with running rights over the BNSF between Lost Springs & Abilene, KS...

The joint Union Pacific / Rock Island Limon, CO, depot stands and is the Limon Depot Museum.  The Rock Island trackage is in place at the depot and east towards Goodland, Kansas, operated these days by the Kyle RR.  The UP runs trains on the Limon Subdivision (Denver, CO, to Sharon Springs, Kansas).  The Rock Island/UP diamond was removed at Limon many years ago.

Those CTC islands aren't true CTC.  They are sidings with manual interlockings controling the siding switches with ABS between the siding switches.  Listed in the ETT has ABS-TWC.  You need a track warrant to hold the main track at such a location.

This is kind of off topic but since it's Kansas related: which railroad "serves" Oberlin, KS and what if any service is there in Oberlin? (Ancestors settled out there).

My old (1906) Official Kansas RR Map shows the CB&Q as the only RR in town. KCRW287

They shared track with Rock Island during a line relocation in the 1950's.  The Oberlin line was viable, another soft abandonment by, IRRC, Rail America.

I should know this, but apparently I don't…

What is the small depot next to the museum in Ellis?

rock4310, if you're watching this thread, I know you'll have an answer!

Thanks!

That is the Penokee Depot in Ellis. I don't know about my spelling of the depot though. upkpfan
