Nice Day on Cajon Today
Author: TrackMap

A very nice day on Cajon Pass this afternoon: temps in the 70s and plenty of trains. These are grab-shots of a passing KCS unit, second in consist on a WB UP train at "Thank You Hill" also known as "West Summit Island."

Nice series!   I bet it was well into the low 80's in LA, huh?!?   Crazy hot for January for sure...

I spent the afternoon on a hill in Riverside overlooking the UP/BNSF junction, and that train was the only one UP offered up other than the LOB40 local.  There was a track gang working on a project just west of the junction, so presumably UP was sending as much as possible via the ex-SP.  The photo below didn't actually happen - BNSF 7373 east was about 30 seconds too late to make it into the same frame as the head end of UP 8753 west.  I combined the two images in Photoshop.

Good job on PS!  Great scene on a nice clear day... courtesy of the Santa Anas, I presume.

Nice image! Those new red/gray apartments on Mission Inn Ave really stand out. Looks like the trackwork on the permanent realignment of the Pachappa OH is coming along nicely. The shoofly bridge, occupied by the UP train in the image, will be removed.

What exactly are they doing there with the track work and 2 bridges?
We go by this area every day while delivering appliances, and I always wonder, ever since they widened the 91fwy and added that 2nd bridge.

Any reason for the close up of KCS unit image #1?

How do you get access to this hill above the UP/BNSF junction ?  Also,  what is the neighborhood like at that location?   Thanks

Looks like the top of Pachappa Hill.  There is a road with the same name that ends at or near the top.  Looking at GoogleMaps seems to be some nice houses up there.

I scrambled up the east side from Panorama Rd.  The neighborhood is okay, and my car was still intact when I got back to it.
