Denver Rock Island RR trackage Removal 17 Jan 2021
Author: cozephyr

The Denver Rock Island RR (DRIR) abandoned (as of early December 2020) Denver Stockyards trackage was being removed mid-January 2021.  Note new utility pole installed before all the abandoned trackage was pulled up.  View looks northwest on the Platte River area trackage at Denver Stockyards, now known as the National Western Complex redevelopment.  Photos taken 17 January 2021 at Denver, Colorado.

I believe the railroad still pays taxes on rail that is still on the ground, even if it's abandoned, or possibility sell the rail for scrap?

The Denver Post reported that the DRI was paid $16.25 miilion to relocate its track for three miles parallel to an improved highway bypass.  DRI is an improved connection between UP and what was the DRGW.  Using the DRI keeps interchange trains out of downtown Denver. DRI continues to switch its customer base.  UP owns a portion of the DRI track as part of the improved connection.  DRI switches it.  DRI also interchanges with BNSF.
