High Speed Amtrak race during triple meet at Westmont, IL in 2004
Author: K8CNW

One of my luckiest railroad meets took place back in the Spring of 2004. While filming in Westmont, IL, I captured an eastbound BNSF freight followed by two Amtrak trains sprinting nose to nose westbound out of Chicago. I believe these trains were the Southwest Chief & Illinois Zeypher. I've seen quite a few meets over the years but nothing else quite like this.

Enjoy!

That’s why it is often called the “Racetrack”! Great video.

Impressive amount of freight on the back of the Amtrak, really cool to see the "express" boxes and roadrailers

Yes, but note that that was more than 16 years ago.

What a thrill that must have been!
Sometimes while taking video or photographs, it is hard to resist putting the camera down and enjoying the assault on your senses. What an awesome display of power.. .

Now that is cool!  You got a great consist on the freight too.  I wonder if the Amtrak engineers were just playin' around...

That's got to be a little scary for the two engineers. If some ped tries to dash across based on assumption they only have to make it one train width in a limited amount of time, said ped could wind up as a locomotive hood ornament.

It’s happened before and the video is around the internet somewhere if you search. In the 90’s a lady crossed the tracks thinking there was only one train but a commuter lead by a BN E9 got her.

My old babysitter was killed that way in Mt Prospect. One thing I noticed about ped vs train accidents is that the shoes always seem to come off.

Now that is exciting rail video!
What would this kind of triple meet/overtake technically be called I wonder?

I'll have a triple meet with double overtake on the side (To Go) please!😃

Great looking video.

There is a great video on YouTube from 1994. The CB&Q E5 and Nebraska Zephyr set were either going to or coming from Galesburg Railroad Days and they were on the double track near Mendota. It was in the process of overtaking a trackage rights SP intermodel. I always wondered what the SP guys thought of a 1940 engine blowing by them at 79.

Search “IRM’s CB&Q 9911 overtakes a stack train”
