Semaphore Signal Sunday: Setting the Record Straight
Author: NMlurker

Trainorders may not be the most sensible place to 'publish' a correction to a print magazine, but it is immediate.  Railfan & Railroad just published their Along the Rails photo gallery for 2020. I had a small image included on page 56. Unfortunately, the image bears almost no relation to the caption and I feel suggests that I may have taken leave of my senses (I have not).  The caption might also appear to be fake news based on the photo. So here, for my own gratification, is my original caption and the photo that goes with it.

1. Westbound Amtrak train #3, the Southwest Chief, is about to split the 717.1/717.2 approach signals for the east siding switch at Levy on a remarkably clear March 5, 2020, on the high plain grasslands of northeastern New Mexico.  The snow-capped mountains in the background, 14047 ft. Culebra Peak (left) and 9627 ft. Fishers Peak (right), are across the border in the state of Colorado.  Having lost their finials years ago, these semaphore signals were replaced at the end of September 2020.

Nice work with both the shot & the go-with information. Very much appreciated... :^)

Culebrra Peak...I think is the southern most 14er in Colorado.

Note the old right-of-way at the left edge
of the pic. The old S-curve shows plainly
on the online aerials.

If that is Culebra Peak, then the other one
can't be Fishers Peak.

(Turns out they're the East and West Spanish
Peaks, 142-143 km beyond the signals.
Culebra Peak is out of the pic to the left.)

Congratulations, Joel.  Too bad they screwed up the photo.  This one was great.
