Plan your semaphore trip now, before prices go up.
Author: rgzfan

For anyone who wants to go see semaphores before they're gone, I've (re)posted list of NM semaphores below.

Recommended lodging
Springer: Broken Arrow Motel is extremely clean, I mean EXTREMELY clean and the couple that runs is extremely pleasant.
Las Vegas: La Castenada is wonderful and historical and railroady. It's an old Harvey House.

Northern Infestation, flat pole caps with one exception

(2) 706 South of Springer. One fat pinnacle and one skinny pinnacle. Easternmost ATSF semaphores.

Oh, I didn't realize I'd used inconsistent terms to describe them. Fixed.

As for fat and skinny... Skinny seems to be regular. Fat is from too many donuts/not enough exercise. See the difference here:

I see the difference now.  In the other link #5 looks like the "fat ladies hips" and the #6 is the "more slender lady".  No offense intended here.  I never realized there was a difference in the pinnacle shapes.

All images below were taken prior to the blades being painted in 2019.

1. West end of Ojita is 778.
2. East end of Chapelle is 788.
3. West end of Chapelle is 789.

849 and 850 are relatively accessible. The five on New Mexico DOT trackage have their finials, but the blades are in weatherbeaten condition.

We're all going to be paying more to pay for the Texas power screwup.

There are just the five that you already listed between Cerrillos and Lamy. The two just east of Cerrillos are 849 and 850.

Talked to a New Mexico friend in the gasoline business yesterday.  Gas prices in much of New Mexico are going up as much as 10 cents per gallon per DAY right now.  He noted that, in some areas, diesel fuel is now in short supply and gasoline supplies are tightening, as well.  Texas refinery shutdowns are partly to blame; also spring is usually when a lot of refineries shut down temporarily for maintenance.  He says $4+ gasoline by April-May.  He expects $5-$6 per gallon by fall, thanks to the new administration's energy and government spending policies.  By the way, he is political moderate--just recognizing reality.
