SCRM Fairbanks Morse Project Update
Author: D-Althaus

SCRM's 1956 Fairbanks Morse H12-44 SF560 locomotive is being restored. That mean's that it will be operational and have a new Zebra Stripe paint scheme. The engine runs but has issues with oil leaks and spitting oil out the stack. We know the engine is worn, but not worn out. As such, we will plan to use it occasionaly, along with our other larger locomotives. It's not an ideal locomotive for day to day switching. That is especially true due to the design of FM's cabs and long hoods. Our Center Cab GE's and small EMD SW1 will still be the normal switchers. The FM locomotive ran for 17 years in a scrap yard and essentially never got out of idle power. That caused a very severe build-up of oily carbon in the exhaust manifolds and snubbers (mufflers). The snubbers have been removed for cleaning and while they are removed, we have access to the area behind them for seal replacement, repair of a water leak, and cleaning. The other issue that we have had is related to sticky injection pump plungers. All 12 were frozen after 30 years of storage. We replaced them with RTO units and they worked fine. Then about a month later, one of those was stuck and two more were close to being stuck. For now, we plan to use a fuel additive and see if that helps solve the issue. The fuel tank had been totally drained before addiding fresh fuel and the filters had been replaced. Then, many gallons of fresh fuel was piped through the system to ensure that everything was flushed out. The pictures show one snubber being removed. We expect the project cost to be about $40K. https://socalrailway.org/collections/santa-fe-railway/560-details/

Might as well give the entire exhaust belt a good cleaning while its apart.

OP's are very sensitive to being over filled with oil, something to keep in mind.   When they wet stack badly, it could be a sign of mis-matched liners and ring sets as well.
