Western Railroad Discussion > Low Light, Late TrainDate: 04/18/21 21:03 Low Light, Late Train Author: mg8711 Yesterday, Amtrak was running just over 3 and a half hours late, passing through Emporia, Kansas just after sunrise. Conveniently the girlfriend and I both had to wake up early and I was able to get the train coming through town, albeit hardly an ounce of light to work with given a cloudy day. Not my worst effort at an image, but I don't expect an email from Trains requesting to publish it either.
1) AMTK 77 leads the eastbound Southwest Chief through Emporia, as seen from Union Street, just ahead they'll hang a left onto the Topeka Sub at NR Jct., as will 3 other trains behind them. Image taken April 17th, 2021 Thanks for looking! mg8711 Date: 04/18/21 21:44 Re: Low Light, Late Train Author: santafe199 Nice catch! Living in Emporia for 9 years there were many times I would see a "current" train at one of the city's street crossings. And my mind would drift back to a post WWII period when Uncle John ran over 2 dozen timetable scheduled passenger trains over those very same crossings... EVERY 24 HOURS!!!

Date: 04/19/21 09:46 Re: Low Light, Late Train Author: brc600 Why did Amtrak quit stopping at the depot? Was there a fire at the Emporia, KS depot? Why not erect a replacement?

Emporia was eliminated most likely due to a combination of economics and politics. I was working up in Montana at the time so I’m sure someone else probably has better details than me... > ... Was there a fire at the Emporia, KS depot? The two story, former Eastern Division HQ/Amtrak ticket office was gutted by a highly suspicious fire in 1999. But AFAIK there an “Amshack” sheet in place on the old Psgr platform... Why not erect a replacement? $$$$$$$$$$$$$ Posted from iPhone Date: 04/19/21 13:46 Re: Low Light, Late Train Author: texchief1 Very nice shot!
