Low Light, Late Train
Author: mg8711

Yesterday, Amtrak was running just over 3 and a half hours late, passing through Emporia, Kansas just after sunrise. Conveniently the girlfriend and I both had to wake up early and I was able to get the train coming through town, albeit hardly an ounce of light to work with given a cloudy day. Not my worst effort at an image, but I don't expect an email from Trains requesting to publish it either.

1) AMTK 77 leads the eastbound Southwest Chief through Emporia, as seen from Union Street, just ahead they'll hang a left onto the Topeka Sub at NR Jct., as will 3 other trains behind them.

Nice catch! Living in Emporia for 9 years there were many times I would see a "current" train at one of the city's street crossings. And my mind would drift back to a post WWII period when Uncle John ran over 2 dozen timetable scheduled passenger trains over those very same crossings... EVERY 24 HOURS!!!

sigh...............

Nice to see #4 at "full" strength, even if missing the baggage car.   Thanks for posting.

I would like to see how they got to 3.5 hours late.  Seems like anytime you check on Amtrak trains they are running not only late but, a lot late.

Why did Amtrak quit stopping at the depot? Was there a fire at the Emporia, KS depot? Why not erect a replacement?

Emporia was eliminated most likely due to a combination of economics and politics. I was working up in Montana at the time so I’m sure someone else probably has better details than me...

The two story, former Eastern Division HQ/Amtrak ticket office was gutted by a highly suspicious fire in 1999. But AFAIK there an “Amshack” sheet in place on the old Psgr platform...

Why not erect a replacement?
