April 25,2021 on Union Pacific's Black Butte Subdivision is seeing  a spring snowfall.It was much greater at the higher elevation around Bray and Grass Lake but enough to powder the lead motor.The southbound stacker is at Deer Moutain  Road which is between Grass Lake and Andesite.Bill Webb

Nice coating of the cold stuff. Didn't really get much of that this year.

That location is the old siding of Cougar, there's a little extra flat space on the far side of the train that extends to the east, not really sure where the switches where though. The road is Deer Mountain road, it actually extends a good ways and connects with other roads leading to hiway 89 near McCloud, haven't had the time to try that road out but hopefully this summer. It happens I drove along this trail a few days after this snow event, noticed some other tire tracks, but the big mud pit was dry so it all worked out ok for me, no photos though. That power line has really changed the views along there, also went into Bolam and Whitney Creek, big poles and wire in just the wrong spot.

The satellite view through Google Earth Pro shows the siding footprint very clearly.  It appears to be a one mile long siding.  There is a lot of shade on the south side of the main that makes for a good train watching spot.  Unfortunately, the daytime rail traffic is was down.  Best time for photos there are in the late afternoon with the western sun.  PhotoBob has submitted many photos from that location.
 

Great light late in the day around the summer solstice, also compass north at Andesite. Seems to be one of the few accessible locations these days.
...durn trees though. Some of the Bob's photos show very few trees in the 60' s.
