Tehachapi Derailment?
Author: stevelv

People on the loop cam chat reporting a derailment in wee hours of the morning around tunnel 7 with 20 cars reported on the ground.  Can anyone confirm this info or add details?

I haven't found anything on it ether except from the Loop camera chat & the others related to it.
Took out a signal & switch?
Is tunnel 7 the one you can park on top of easily? Right off Caliente/ Bodfish road?

I believe tunnel 7 is between Rowan and Cliff.

Hearing from solid sources that cars are derailed inside Tunnel 7.

Derailment is at Tunnel 7 / South Cliff, intermodal train, 15-20 cars.

Looking at ATCS there is south  train lined up into the siding at Rowen. Train also on the main. The south switch at Rowen looks OK on ATCS. From Rowen to Woodford and the north switch not so good( BLUE). There is a train on the main at Woodford.

When I was on tehachapi earlier this morning, it was a northbound UP Manifest stopped at Rowen. From what I was told earlier, mountain could have been open as early as 16:00. I don't know the current status

I just arrived in Davis traveling on 99 and only had seen three south bound trains which were two manifest and one domestic intermodal not much heading north except a Gypsum train the white stuff farmers use in the fields. It was tied up waiting for a signal and one other. Fresno yard was light on trains but not empty.

Someone said BNSF this time....I would say more then 3/4 of the derailment that happen on Tehachapi are BNSF. yes they run more trains then UP but they also are allowed to run more engines up front on a train then UP is.

That was true for the Santa Fe back in the 70's and 80's as well. Fairly common to see 5 or even 6 locomotives on the head end of Santa Fe eastbounds climbing Tehachapi.

Good example:

4/17/1981

ATSF 901 train at Bealville -

5699/5540/8775/3312/3808/5925

Tehachapi is on the UP Mojave Sub. All trains are governed by their (UP) Timetable SSI.

Yeah but Santa Fe figured out quick by the mid 80s that they can't run too much power up front and their trains were getting longer at the time, thing I also don't get is what the Hell's wrong up there, every year there's at least one train that goes on the ground up there and you hardly heard that being an issue when it was SP and Santa Fe!
