Western Railroad Discussion > Coast line shutdown at San Clemente - impact on freight service?Date: 09/16/21 09:14 Coast line shutdown at San Clemente - impact on freight service? Author: hotrail Any word on how the shutdown of the coast line in San Clemente will impact BNSF freight? I don't see any service advisory on their website. Any chance they are going to let BNSF run freight at night?

Barstow will still send out SB daygos, but they get tied down between Corona and Devore and don't start moving again until the shutdown's over. I don't think SBD bothers to build any SB auto trains during shutdowns, and San Diego grinds to a halt.

By the Surf Line being shut down at San Clemente, is that only a late night thing (like for maintenance) or does that affect daytime passenger trains, like with a bridge out, landslide, derailment, etc.? Track ClosuresEffective September 16 – October 3, 2021 Track work south of San Clemente In order to allow for the completion of track work in south Orange County necessary to ensure the ongoing safe operation of the service, the Pacific Surfliner will not operate south of Irvine on Thursday, September 16 through Sunday, September 19. Beginning Monday, September 20 and extending through Sunday, October 3, no Pacific Surfliner trains will operate between Irvine and Oceanside stations. Bus connections will be provided between Irvine and Oceanside, with reduced train service resuming between Oceanside and San Diego. Regular Pacific Surfliner service should resume no later than Monday apologize for any inconveniences it causes our riders. We will continue to look for ways to minimize the impact of these closures as this critical work continues. In additional BNSF handling some Rip-Rap trains, so maybe these are maybe being called. Waves came up on to the rails south of San Clemente passenger stop. Wednesday trains operated under slow orders, prepared to stop. Line closed now, will open before Oct 3 if work finished. Repair window will include previously scheduled work.
This video from CBS 8 KFMB in San Diego shows San Clemente trackside cliff damage etc. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/metrolink-to-suspend-service-to-oceanside-station-for-track-work/ar-AAOwOmL Edited 1 time(s). Could have been your H-BARSDG or a V-xxxSDG. It'll be going by the San Juan Capistrano railcam in about a half hour. mapboy Date: 09/17/21 06:30 Re: Coast line shutdown at San Clemente - impact on freight servi Author: trainjunkie mapboy Wrote:

It went by me about 2230 at Esperanza where we sat on a 15K stack train waiting to head west. Date: 09/17/21 08:06 Re: Coast line shutdown at San Clemente - impact on freight servi Author: mundo From what I can dig up, the track will not be torn up or replaced. With just dumping Rip-Rap, could be a window for freights to use the line with a slow order.
Only a wild guess. Date: 09/17/21 10:55 Re: Coast line shutdown at San Clemente - impact on freight servi Author: suvart mundo Wrote:

Like others reported, all the freights ran last night and the rip rap trains are on their way. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/17/21 10:58 by suvart. Shutdown for pass only. 5 trains of rip rap to be called out of Porphyry to run down there and dump.
