Flash flood watches Far Northern California
Author: Graybeard1942

Right now, the Feather River Canyon (State Hwy 70) is closed to vehicle traffic because of hazardous condtions.  Debris is coming down the mountain slopes in the aftermath of the Dixie Fire.  I would suspect that UP and BNSF will both restrict rail traffic until conditions are stabilized. (I visited the canyon on the first day the highway reopened during the fire and was rewarded with smokey photographs and a tire destroyed in a sudden rock slide near Twain).

Heavier rain is expected this weekend throughout far northern California.

A flash flood watch is also in effect along U.S. Highway 97 in Siskiyou County.  This is the area of the recent Lava Fire   The UP Black Butte Sub will be affected and several drainages in that area have been known in the past to take out both rails and the highway.  A worse case scenario is all rail routes north close down until the series of storms is gone.

Highway 70 opened at 1:47 PM but I'm sure there is more to come for months to come!

Watching TV news or listening to the radio news every third topic was warnings of flash flood and debris flow, either Dixie Fire, or Caldor, or the Santa Cruz Mountains. Then watching TV news the Ski Resorts are talking about record snowfall expected this weekend.

Nothing to be surprised about, after virtually all wildland fires of any size, flash flooding follows, typically for several or more years.
