Life on the railroad... no wonder so many people are quitting.

The best one ever was Doug Seibert telling the CP caller what every TE&Y has thought for at least 50 years.

RIP Doug. Hope you’re ridin’ the Skidoo’s and drinking a thousand million gallons of whiskey and are gooned…. 😆

The only time I ever deliberately missed a call was on Thanksgiving 2010. I was supposed to get out that night, but somebody laid off on call, & they deadheaded a couple of crews, so they called me for 11am if I remember. I had about 30 people arriving for dinner,
So I just let it ring till it went to voice mail. I marked up, worked two more trips, and retired Dec. 2nd.

that brings back a fine memory for me.

one saturday i was on the conductor's extra-board and approx. 20x out.  the rodeo was in town and the wife and i were looking forward to going to it.

of course, what red-blooded American goes to a rodeo and doesn't drink a few beers?

so, i had a few as during the rodeo i was over 10x out and not much was showing.  on the way home the phone rang and you know who was calling.

decision time:  lay-off on call or ignore/miss the call.  for some reason i chose to answer and was going to "lay-off" on call.

i answered the phone and a recording told me i had been BUMPED off of the extra-board by one of my senior classmates!!!  OUTSTANDING!!!  i rode the bump for another day off too!!!

the next time i saw my classmate at our afht, i bought him lunch...........

The above comments don't just apply to TE&Y people.

I was just sitting down to have Christmas dinner with my family in 1996 or 1997 when the phone rang.  This was during the UP/SP meltdown period when they asked the BNSF to help them by moving some of the coal trains to City Public Service (CPS) which just lasted a few months.  They said the UP wanted us to pull our empty coal train out of CPS unloading facility near Elmendorf, TX (just SE of San Antonio) so the UP could get one of their loaded trains into the facility.  After pulling our train out they wanted our crew to shove it down the Elmendorf branch and tie it down but our conductor refused to do it because he had never been on that branch.  I hadn't either.  After telling the family good-bye I leave Temple, TX for a 3 hour drive.  Upon arrival I tell the crew I am protecting their shoving move.  There is a road right beside the railroad track so the move was easy to be protected.  If the conductor had not wanted to ride the rear car he could have walked ahead protecting the move.  The BNSF did have trackage rights on that line.  After the move I had a 3 hour drive back home.

I've lived in the same neighborhood as the conductor for 30 some years and have had to work on myself to not have negative thoughts whenever I see him.  But he sure messed up my Christmas.

Okay. And the Carriers have messed up plenty of holidays, birthdays, funerals, weddings, births, deaths, graduations, retirements and nights with the spouse, not just Christmas 1997 for plenty of TE&Y.
