I meant the painting itself,  not the location pictured.

Are you sure that's a Fogg? It's certainly in his style, but it lacks the detail in brush technique and subtlety and tonal depth in color that marks his work. At a date for such subject content as in this painting, yes, he would have been getting up there in years. But my impression is that he maintained his technique to a pretty high level.

Not meaning to stir things up, and am not questioning your credibility and veracity. But all good painters have had their copyists and forgers, particularly when their work starts commanding good prices in the marketplace.

AFAIK none of the fully lettered SPSF units got out into revenue service.
Kodachromes were all with either the SP or SF paint only in big letters.
"SPSF" = "Shouldn't have Painted So Fast" indeed.  ;-)
Thanks for sharing.

Howard gave three of us a color print of the painting when we visited him in 1986 as he was working on a watercolor for me.  My post is a scan of that print.  The SPSF painting went to ATSF corporate,  so it's probably still around somewhere.

This painting appears on Page 143 of the book The Railroad Artistry of Howard Fogg by Ronald C. Hill and Al Chione.  The caption states that the scene is near West Williams Junction, AZ which is a Santa Fe location.  The San Francisco Peaks are in the background.

For all of the paintings reproduced in the book, there is a note attributing the source of the painting.  For this painting, the note states "Courtesy of the Fogg Family."

The book was published in 1999, three years after Howard Fogg passed away.

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I think they have addressed any concerns about the authenticity of the painting. My apologies for raising a ruckus about it when none was necessary.

Fogg even got the road number correct for an ex-Santa Fe SD45.  ATSF 5300-5408 were to have become SPSF 7000-7108.
