Western Railroad Discussion > Derailment near Los Angeles intermodal facilityDate: 01/15/22 17:46 Derailment near Los Angeles intermodal facility Author: walstib Approximately 17 cars of a Union Pacific train derailed today in Los Angeles, near the site of the recent cargo thefts in the news.

Regards,DK Date: 01/15/22 21:10 Re: Derailment near Los Angeles intermodal facility Author: funnelfan Looks like a turnout may have thrown under the train. I wonder with so much crap on the rail, the CTC system could not sense the train in the plant and reacted to a stack command to line the plant for the another move and lined the switch under the train?

Main 2 is restricted speed needing permission fron the Shops Yardmaster to enter the limits. There aren't any switches connecting to main 1 between Yuma Jct MP 482.8 and Valley blvd MP485.6.
Date: 01/15/22 23:30 Re: Derailment near Los Angeles intermodal facility Author: MrMRL This "smash-n-grab" style theft is exponentially climbing on the BNSF Railway out of Los Angeles, CA. Primarily spurred on (in my opinion) by the unresolved (and now increasingly public) U.P. problem, and increased Social Media spread... Inbound (and now outbound) trains are (again) increasingly being targeted by opportunistic thieves due to the longstanding lack of reliable "rent-a-cop" security, along with accountability from local rail management over who is realistically responsible for the theft problem.
It only takes an $8.99 'Harbor Freight' bolt cutter, and a 5-20 min stopped container train, to crack open 6-12 containers to see if someone hits the jackpot. US RRs typically run through the "rougher" parts of the US's major metropolitan regions. A quick and semi-educated internet search across available online social media services (including Trainorders.com) can near readily provide the basic information needed to track down the next lucratively potential target freight train. Better container locks or better overall security service are desperately required. Mr. MRL Date: 01/15/22 23:43 Re: Derailment near Los Angeles intermodal facility Author: funnelfan MrMRL Wrote:

What would help would be something akin to those old "bulkhead" stack cars that had a superstructure to hold to top container in place, but nothing quite so substantial. Just a framework that prevents opening the doors of the containers. Granted it won't help a 40' container loaded in a 53' well, but it would at least keep the 53' containers safe. Its been a while since I have run a train in that direction. What about the crossoveR switches at Sichel Street? Have they been eliminated? Posted from Android Edited 1 time(s). If he is in the system they might be able to ID him with facial recognition.
