Western Railroad Discussion > Arizona trip day oneDate: 05/10/22 21:13 Arizona trip day one Author: AndyBrown My friend Russ and I started our annual trip to the southwest today, this year we're doing the Santa Fe in Arizona, mostly a review for us but plenty of good scenery out here!
1. Russ grabbed this shot of me hard at work at Hackberry with an EB going by. 2&3. Next stop was the Truxton Flyover where we shot the same EB and got a WB going under. Date: 05/10/22 21:16 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: AndyBrown 4. Russ's drone shot at Truxton; good stuff!
5. We followed the same manifest into the little canyon east of Peach Springs. 6. Shot from the bird. Date: 05/10/22 21:18 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: AndyBrown 7. Nice pair of '40s in the consist of the eastbound.
8. We were a little surprised to see this manifest parked on the siding at Nelson. 9. One of the McMillan books calls this Pan Canyon, up the hill a few miles from Seligman. Westbound Z going down. Date: 05/10/22 21:22 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: AndyBrown 10. Eastbound in Pan Canyon east of Seligman.
11. Pushers on the stack train, looking east. In the distance you might be able to see the overpass at Crookton. 12. Late in the day we knew the DS had a bunch of westbound stacked up east of Williams Junction. He finally turned them loose around 5-6pm so we got a couple before dark. Here's a westbound coil train coming out the west end of Pan Canyon, up the hill from Seligman. Date: 05/10/22 21:24 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: AndyBrown 13. Forgot to add a couple more of Russ's drone shots, westbound grain is topping the hill at Yampai, between Nelson and Seligman.
14. Eastbound Z is crossing over 2 to 1 at the Yampai crossover. Thanks for looking! Andy Date: 05/10/22 21:46 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: coach Those SD-40-2's look small compared to the GE's.

I have been back in there on the paved highway, but looks like you found some great places accessed by dirt roads. Regards, Jim Evans Date: 05/11/22 11:24 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: Railfan4Christ Great series, hope your stay out here is enjoyable.
Tom Date: 05/11/22 11:56 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: bobk A most excellent series!
Date: 05/11/22 13:45 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: yyz Yes, great photos! How did you get to the south side of the tracks in pan canyon? Did you hike in from old route 66?
Thanks, Jonathan Date: 05/11/22 13:52 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: texchief1 Very nice shots!
RC Lundgren Elgin, TX Date: 05/11/22 17:45 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: pedrop Very nice location. I visited the Frost flyover in 2011 and I see this one here is much bigger. Why it was built?

Yes, walked in from the highway. It's a good workout and be careful of all the barbed wire laying around. I ripped my overalls last time I hiked back in there. Lotta loose rock too, but it's worth the effort! Andy Date: 05/11/22 19:27 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: AndyBrown pedrop Wrote:

To make the transition from right hand running up through Kingman Canyon to left hand running east of Peach Springs without crossover moves. But I have to say, I'm surprised at how many trains are parked waiting for overtakes and crossover moves, or for some other non apparent reason. Seems like velocity is way down on the old Santa Fe in Arizona. Still a lotta trains though. Andy Date: 05/12/22 02:03 Re: Arizona trip day one Author: BCHellman What actual day was day 1?
