SCRM Restoration of Fairbanks Morse SF560 (H12-44)
Author: D-Althaus

The restoration of the trucks from under SF560 is under way. The trucks have been steam cleaned, the journal boxes repacked with new pads and oil, the support bearing cellars checked for water intrusion, and the brake assemblies have been removed. Carl is in the process of totally disassembling the brake assemblies to check for bushing wear and to straighten any bent pieces that are salvageable and then to identify the list of parts that we will need to buy. We considered not taking the brake assemblies apart but knew from past experience that bushing wear could not be seen. Sure enough, one brake assembly was dismantled and totally worn out bushings were found. All of the brake assemblies will now be torn down and inspected for repair or replacement. Carl is in the process of doing all of that work in his own shop. Frank did most of the steam cleaning and repacked the journal boxes. The fuel tank sight glasses have been refurbished and we are now ready to pump fuel back into the tank. Tim and Bob are in the process of replacing the brake cylinder cups on all eight brake pistons. That is much easier now that the trucks are out from under the locomotive. The locomotive has a 17 year history of working in a scrap yard so it wasn't surprising to see significant damage to the brake rigging. Plus one of the pedestal retaining bars was totally missing. Fortunately the truck frame pedestal opening had not bent wider around the journal box. A replacement retainer bar was located and installed.

Fortunately the brake rigging was not mangled as in the SP 1006. Bushing  replacement will restore the brake assembly to almost as delivered!
