Western Railroad Discussion > Another bit of Dunsmuir is about to bite the dustDate: 07/22/22 11:03 Another bit of Dunsmuir is about to bite the dust Author: photobob The railfans dream house at Dunsmuir is about to get demolished. I don't know when it was built but you can't get much closer to the tracks. All existing railroad structures including the city owned building on the sight of the old roundhouse is doomed. I would have to assume this includes the famous water tank painted by John Signor. All railroad operation will be relocated to the yard. I'm sure the Amtrak depot will survive. As for the turntable I'm pretty sure it will also remain. All the soil from the tracks to the river will be removed and replaced. The image of Dunsmuir as a once thriving rail community will be erased, As you can see by the interior shots of the house it was probably only a matter of time before it was set on fire. My how times have changed. The last shot is of a sign placed in the parking lot next to the station.

Adam Date: 07/22/22 11:46 Re: Another bit of Dunsmuir is about to bet the dust Author: photobob I believe the property is owned by the UP. While watching the Dunsmuir Web Cam this morning I heard the conductor talking to the engineer about the house looking abandoned. Someone came on the radio and said the UP had kicked them out and were getting ready to knock down everything. Of course they took down the concrete building that was next to the depot a while ago.

The current SPH&TS Trainline has a feature about the turntable. From what I've heard the big action is north of the turntable, where the original very large Oil storage tank was. There was really quite a bit of action going on in that area that has been simply graveled or paved over. We'll see what comes out of all this.I was told that the existing yard office was to be taken down and a new one to be built in the lower yard.

I had no idea that this cleanup was going on...sounds like it was long overdue. typical railyard. yes, I also miss the old Dunsmuir but one can now appreciate the 1727 and the restored/operational Dunsmuir water fountain and the Willamette. I remember my first sights of this town as the train was going down the hill. It was the first time I saw the snow in my life. I remember that I said to myself " God, I'm really far from home!"
