Western Railroad Discussion > MRL west of Helena

Put on MRL last couple of days. We saw quite a few trains on Bozeman including several coal trains. Thing is we have seen very few westbound west of Helena. Where are the westbound going?

Oh, they are there. Work windows (Mullan & Nimrod Tunnels) this past week on the Third Sub have made trains to run at night. Also work windows on the Second Sub just east of Helena.

To add to Dave's comments, I have heard that most of the trains westbound through Helena are timed to get into Hauser and Pasco within certain time windows to avoid some congestion. During the early afternoon it's not uncommon to see the Helena Yards nearly empty. But after five or six in the evening, things start moving.
