Flange squeal question
Author: tomstp

I have noticed that well cars for hauling containers have a lot of flange squealing on straight track in Big Sandy Tx  where as other cars on the same track only rarely put out a squeel.  Anyone know why?

Possibly lack of lubrication at the truck center-plate bearing causing the truck(s) to 'crab' with resultant flange squeal.

Irregular tread wear (a deep wear on the outter tread of one wheel vs. a sharply worn flange on the opposite wheel) can also cause trucks to run chronicly skewed, greatly shortening the life of the wheels.
They can also cause heavy gauge widening forces on curves up to and including low rail turnover.
The worst examples I  have seen are the middle trucks on articulated cars.
