Sliding Thru The Long Weekend On The BNSF-A Bit Of Traction
Author: Ritzville

It was a pleasent sunny day in Ritzville, WA on the BNSF Lakeside Sub on the Northern Transcon. The high-low was 83-58. Traffic is at 13 trains since midnight with more on the way. Most of these trains were caught by ear. ATCS finally came up late yesterday while I was in Spokane. ATCS sure makes a big difference in catching trains, lol. My ears tend to catch the train too late unless I'm outside. Here are some trains from Saturday thru Monday and a bit of Traction and some.

9/3/2022

1. WB 324pm "Z" train with BNSF 7387-9253 and NS 1053 on the point with DPU.
2. Another shot of NS 1053 on same train.
3. TOFC on the roll on same train.

No 20 shows car 713 sitting at the western terminus if the Venice Short Line, which is actually in Santa Monica, on
Ocean Ave and Broadway.

The portion of the Venice Short Line (VSL), between 4th St & Hill Sts in downtown Los Angeles was built by the
Pasadena & Pacific Ry, a predecessor Los Angeles Pacific, in 1897 and became Pacific Electric property in the
1911 "Great Merger" which formed 'New' PE. The last VSL train ran on September 17, 1950 with a franchise car
running until 12/28/1950.

EDIT: Car 713 was built by Brill (not St Louis as my original post stated) in 1925 and was converted to one-man operation
in 1950 which also saw it renumbered to 5163. The car was scrapped in 1956 while in Metropolitan Coach Lines ownership.
Here it sits, pre-converted, while its crew relaxes and takes in the ocean breeze.

TTC 4600 was photographed at the Halton County Radial Railway Museum in Campbellville, ON.  I was there in 2019 and 4600 is still going strong, altough it looked like it was in the middle of a refurbishment and was pressed in to service!

No 23 with the rails in the street and the catenary suspension in place this fairly screams American Ave (now Long Beach Blvd),
in the 850 block. Wondering about "BEAST" in the destination sign? Privately owned?

Thanks Rob for the location of PCC 4600 and picture, much appreciated! Thanks Charlie for your comments on #23. I thought the sign was a bit different.

Ritzville Action
Moderate weather with interesting train traffic.
Two AMTK opportunities due to late running.
Intermodal traffic adds color, variety, and interest.
Mililtary loads offered surprise and opportunity.
Unit of the Day is NS #1053.

Historic Traction

A Google Maps search shows a "Easy Ave" in Long Beach. Maybe DundasMP23 got it right and the first character in the destination sign was '8'
and the Long Beach Transit bus was displaying "8 EASY".

Wikipedia tells us that Long Beach City Lines and Long Beach Motor Bus Company were acquired from National City Lines in 1963 and formed
Long Beach Transit. That might explain the NCL 'Fruit Salad' paint job on the 7609.

Thanks Allen for your comments and interesting review, alway appreciated. That 1957 Ford Fairlane was a good looker back then. That Ford sort of truck was different looking in the Peerless picture. Charlie, I think Rob hit it on the head, looks like 8 EASY.

Great trains today Larry. I like the military trains. Those flat cars are really big to get three vehickes at a time.
