High-Hood Spotted in Des Moines
Author: Mid_Iowa_Rails

Yesterday I got word that a NS high-hood Geep had made its way to Des Moines, so after work I decided to go take a look for myself. On my way over to Glake Yard, I happened to spot it just east of downtown, apparently tied down.

Good catch. Not many left on NS. Thanks for sharing. Ben

Cool! Not too many fat nose Geeps left on NS. I've only seen a few since the Conrail invasion. Twenty one, Twenty two years, heck, I lost count.
Thanks,
Gonut

Awesome! I didn’t know there were any left. Anybody know the exact count?

According to this roster I found, 69: 10 SD40-2s, and 59 GP38-2s, though several are stored.

Norfolk Southern, operating on the remaining Des Moines Union Rwy assets.
At one point, Des Moines was reached by the Wabash, though with line abandonments it's something of an island for NS, reached by trackage rights over BNSF and IAIS.

Norfolk Southerns Des Moines operation is totally isolated from the rest of the NS system. They operate a day and night shift switch jobs serving local industries and switching out/build the BNSF road train. They have their own yard called Glake on the very south side of the city.

IIRC Glake was built to replace the Des Moines yard downtown.
