Sierra Northern Railway - Ventura County Division (California)
Author: WP921

The National Weather Service this afternoon issued a Flash Flood Warning for the area along California State Route 126 between Santa Paula and Santa Clarita, which parallels the Sierra Northern Railway's Ventura County Division.  My afternoon Television Broadcast in Southern California was interrupted by a specific warning mentioning Santa Paula, Fillmore, and Santa Clarita, as being under imminent threat of flash flooding due to heavy rain.  I recall in the past, during the Fillmore and Western era, the line suffered numerous washouts.  Anyone have any news or updates on the condition of the railroad?

There is one section of the branch line that floods badly at the Loose Caboose.  The bridge here was replaced a few years ago and should be in good shape. However, it is in a flood zone and most likely flooding.  West of Fillmore there is a wash with a history of flooding over about a mile east of the fish hatchery.

There are numerous bridges on the branch in various stages of decay.   There is one bridge just east of the Red School House before the 126 crossing that had some serious scouring that was recommended for repair by the County's contracted engineering firm back in 2021. Hopefully, Sierra Northern fixed that problem. If the recommended work was done to all the bridges then they should hold up.

It's not raining hard, just a rumor. I mean just because BNSF had to make a Hyrail rescue at 810.5 on the Mojave of a track crew
stranded in a wash by rising flood waters doesn't mean anything. We all know it never rains in that part of the desert.

That spot is parallel where the railroad has a history of washouts. I bet a chunk of the railroad is hanging there.
