Maroon Monday: Maroon sunset on the old Rock Island
Author: santafe199

This will be one of the rare times you’ll see a Rock Island subject on the Western forum. This is old Rock Island territory at Herington, KS. But this territory hasn’t seen a Rock Island train for almost 43 years. So it’s very kind of Mother Nature to provide some maroon color just to remind us of what was once a Mighty Fine road...

1. UP 8634 sits eastbound on the GSR, short of the modern yard office in Herington, KS. It’s 5:41 PM on January 14, 2018.

Thanks for thinking back a ways!

How profetic, in just a couple of months the Rock is gone, all burned out.

It looks like Mother Nature did not neglect to include some Bankruptcy Blue.

It's better to burn out
Than fade away
The Rock is gone
But it's not forgotten

Hey hey, my my
Rock Island can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye
Hey hey, my my...
