SP "K" Trains
Author: ApproachCircuit

SP had certain trains that could pose a problem, especially in areas where there were suburban development restricted to 40 mph.
The SP coast line out of Los Angeles had said retrictions.
They were classified as "K" trains.
Good Idea.
Between certain MP's 40 was the limit.

And running 150 car trains ought to stop- a recipe for eventual diaster.

We had the same restrictions between West Colton and Los Angeles.  In fact, for a time, a westbound K train had to have a walking inspection at Montclair before it could proceed toward Los Angeles.

BNSF has Key train limits through certain high risk areas. 35MPH and no use of auto control. It's a limited practice though and not used in most places, just bigger population centers.

They are referred to as HTUA (High Threat Urban Area) limits and both BNSF and UP have them. The entire San Bernardino subdivision is a HTUA.

I thought that the BNSF also imposed speed restrictions through environmentally sensitive areas such as along the Columbia River.
If anyone has more accurate information please correct me.

And BNSF reports key trains to the UP dispatcher upon entering the UP Mojave Sub.

I'm not quite following this thread.  Are the "K" Trains, those trains traveling through urban areas that pose a danger to the crew, should they stop?

I worked too many "K" trains back in the 70's.  The speed from just east of Gilroy to Oakland was only 30, not 40.  Made for a long, slow trip.  Didn't matter on the Centerville and Decoto lines since they were only 30 anyway.

Actually thru Ventura to Oxnard was 30 mph for vinyl chloride, anhydrous ammonia and certain LPG cars. Also from Chatsworth all the way to West Colton was 30 mph.

Yes the speed limit for "K' trains was 30mph. Excuse my memory! ( Thru certain areas)
And the Sugar Beets all the way from Taylor Yard to SLO was 45.
And if Conductorr Haskin caught you going 48, he got on the radio and would  politely say with emphasis "45""!

Neil Haskin better known as cloud 9. Normally he never had a clue what was going on.
