Switcher Saturday, EMD SW1000 series
Author: masterphots

EMD offered four SW1000 series models,  both domestic and South African.  SW1000/01 were domestic models;  SW1002/03 were South African models and built there.  Here are photos of all four types.  My photos unless noted otherwise

1.  BNSF SW1000 3600,  Omaha, NE,  1/8/00.   Ken Church photo
2.  Amtrak SW1001 at Wilmington, DE  10/8/01   Rich Louderback photo
3.  South African Rys SW1002 36244 at Capetown.  10/16/84

Very cool!  Was not aware of the South African variants.  Built for "Cape Gauge" (3'6") I presume?  And were the SW1003s C-C or A1A-A1A?

thanks,

The 1003's were unique besides being C-C in that they had rotary couplers, the only ones I am aware we ever applied. I got the task to design the underframe for those in LaGrange.
