Earthquake today under Lake Almanor, California
Author: WP921

This afternoon there was a 5.4 magnitude earthquake, the epicenter of which was under Lake Almanor.  That's a medium-sized quake by California standards.  Hopefully no damage to the BNSF Gateway Subdivision, which is nearby.

USGS says 5.5 near the community of East Shore, but the map shows it under Lake Almanor near the dam.  Bet our friends in Crescent Mills were rockin' and rollin'.

Yes, definitly "Rock'in & Roll'in".....
A 5.4 AND a 5.2 about 12 hours apart will get your heart started for sure!!
That last one was strange, both the wife and I felt it shake East_West and then North_South.....

Well, this Crescent Mills person is presently in Scottsdale AZ, but we'll be back Saturday. House sitter says all OK.
The 5.7 on 5-23-2013 gave us a good shake.

I was in Bieber last night and I was awake during the second quake at 318am. Honestly, I didn't feel it, but I heard it. It was a fast one.

Yep I wondered if that what it was.  I was working as a docent in the RPO car at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento,  I thought I felt the car gently shake a bit around 4;15pm and there was nobody on the car but me, sitting in a chair.  Nice to know I wasn't imagingin things.

Question to Californians. As frequent as earthquakes are in Cali, if you were making love at the time, does your parnter say  "we really made the earth move that time"? <G>

There's actually more earthquakes in Oklahoma these days then there are in California. Some think disposal of the waste water from Fracking could be the cause. Lubricates the rocks!

Mt. Lassen, not far from the epicenter here, is still an active volcano (and National Park).  It last erupted about 110 years ago.......you gotta wonder if it's waking up again?

Well since Lassen erupts on average every 7000 to 10,000 years depending on where you read it, I dont think ts much of a concern. But Shasta is a different story, on average 600 to 800 years with last eruption 3000 years. Even though averages dont mean much since volcanos dont read books, its a more likely candidate.

But if you read up on the Oroville eathquake in 1975, it lays blame to to rapid filling of the lake forcing water into a long inactive fault under the dam. Perhaps the fairly dry Lake Almanor the last few years getting rapid fill this winter might have the same effect.

Important to note: If you are ordering at the Pine Shack Frosty in Chester and Lassen erupts, you get your order for free!
