Unscheduled meet in Torrance, Calif

I'm not sure if this link can be accessed:

This occured on the BNSF Harbor Subdiivision just north of Torrance Blvd Thursday afternoon.  From the photos, I'm guessing that a stack train pulling out of the Alcoa siding to go back to the Harbor met a local.

"Earlier today, Torrance Fire (TFD) responded to a report of a train accident near Torrance Blvd. and Sierra St. A low speed, low impact occurred between two locomotives. This caused a minor oil spill along, one wheel off track, and a minor injury to rail personnel. No offsite safety impact to the public or property."

This is all single track in this area. The only Dble track is to the west passed Crenshaw Blvd.  it go to more than one track.

Most unfortunate. "What we have here, is failure to communicate". This line has been "restricted limits" MOST of it's life. It is actually amazing this hasn't happened before.

No double track at all.  Directly to the west (railroad east) is Alcoa siding and 1 main track.

I certainly wouldn't want to be in a hard metal/plastic locomotive cab making a hook north of 20 MPH...

Yes.  I've often wondered about this. From what I've seen, I think that there are 2 local jobs who probably don't overlap much (if at all) and thus can keep track of each other.  Since I haven't seen a stack train move to or from Alcoa in years, I've assumed that they run at night when there's little chance of a conflict.  This all creates a possibility for complacency in the crews.

As near as I can tell, this happened in the middle of the day, so the local crew wasn't expecting anything and the stack train crew just wasn't as alert as they should be.

This occured just north of Torrance Blvd. Just after the start of the curve headed north. Not a lot of sight line.

Looks to me that both crews will face discipline for not running at restricted speed. It will all be determined at an investigation by reviewing the in and out board cameras. Plus reviewing the downloads of the locomotives. I bet the Santa Fe will require more communications between the crews. Reminds me off the incident on the SP Torrance line years ago when the two engines collided near 108th Street.
