Western Railroad Discussion > RM chase down the Dotsero CutoffDate: 09/29/23 08:49 RM chase down the Dotsero Cutoff Author: SP8595 RM being the Rocky Mountaineer and with the Colorado version getting their neat looking standard cab GP's (well I think they're neat anyway}) back on the train a couple of weeks ago, I figured I should probably get some shots of this unique operation.
The train has been Very empty of passengers lately so who knows how long it might continue to run This chase was more of a quantity over quality with scenes from just the usual locations and next time I will try shooting it from the harder "one and done" locations. All pictures taken on Wednesday 9/27. 1) I had initially planned on getting my first shot of the RM at this location West of Bond and was all ready to go when a green signal lit up but it was an empty Union Pacific Oil train with flagless GEVO #7912 leading 5 engines "elephant style" . After a lengthy wait and with the sun angle getting worse, the signals lit up for the Eastbound California Zephyr so I decided to relocate. 2) Amtrak train #6 hustles Eastbound approaching Bond as seen from up above Tunnel #34. The construction to the left is a new, huge golf course complex that is supposedly being built by the lead singer of "Big Head Todd and the Monsters"! 3) At 15:30 the RM finally showed up and is seen crossing the Colorado River, just West of the W. switch at Bond and will soon duck into Tunnel #34. -------------Six More Pictures Posted Below------------------------ Edited 1 time(s). 4) Between Dell and Range with the Colorado River in the background. 5) Entering Red Canyon and crossing the Colorado River. 6) A grab shot as the train nears Range Siding. ----------------Three More Pictures Posted Below-------------------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 09/29/23 08:51 Re: RM chase down the Dotsero Cutoff Author: SP8595 7) Rolling along a couple miles North of Dotsero.
8) Approaching Dotsero. 9) Stopping at the station at Glenwood Springs were the train will terminate for the night. A lot of shots but standard cabs out leading a Passenger train on an Incredible Fall day with Beautiful scenery=why not:} ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 09/29/23 08:51 Re: RM chase down the Dotsero Cutoff Author: FiveChime Very nice and sharp photos!

Try living on the south Plains for awhile... But seriously, these are some terrific images, I haven't been through there for so long I forget how beautiful that section of rail is. Thanks for the great photos... JG Date: 09/29/23 10:42 Re: RM chase down the Dotsero Cutoff Author: highgreengraphics Great shots! The best I have seen. Glad they got their own motors back! === === = === JLH

Hanggie and that's a major compliment. Out Date: 09/29/23 14:35 Re: RM chase down the Dotsero Cutoff Author: atsf121 What an awesome series, looks like a fun chase! I really like photo #3. I enjoyed that scenery on my one ride through the Rockies on Amtrak's California Zephyr 20 years ago, need to do that again.
Nathan Date: 09/29/23 15:33 Re: RM chase down the Dotsero Cutoff Author: TheNavigator Absolutely nothing to dislike with either the quality or quantity on any of those!
GK Date: 09/29/23 15:48 Re: RM chase down the Dotsero Cutoff Author: 3rdswitch An excellent bunch! The train is on the main at Glenwood Springs? Will it move to a siding for the night?
JB Date: 09/29/23 15:50 Re: RM chase down the Dotsero Cutoff Author: bobk An absolutely awesome series!!

I was out there in July from Indiana and hoping for RM power but I had to settle for UP pulling the train.
