BNSF Transcon closed at Hazelton KS due too derailment 2/12/2024
Author: Cumbres

Was listening on the scanner this morning and DS 4 was parking WB's east of Wellington, KS.  Farthest east I heard being parked was in Chelsea, KS. That's about 55 miles as the crow flies to Wellington, Not sure on the RR mileage. All due to a derailment of what appears to be a doublestack at Hazelton, KS which is between Attica and Kiowa.   I don't know any information other then what is in the following link.

With the faithful KS hwy 2 closely parallel, that mess is right out there "in front of God & everybody"! Hopefully the clean-up & re-opening will go smoothly...

Looks like a mess!  Hazelton was evacuated in a 1998 derailment.

Does anyone have the length and car count on this train?  Was it an excessive length train?

Based on a car number trace in one of the photos online, it appears to have been the Z-WSPSTO3-11A. 3 motors on the head end, 64 loads, 4377 tons, 6252 length.

Unfortunate, some were all ready to pin it on those long trains and it was a shorty.  : )

Heard today that the derailment was due too a broken rail. Crew had a wild ride but stayed on the tracks. The rest of the train not so much.

Trust me, there are far more PSR-induced problems on the modern railroad than just long trains.
