Western Railroad Discussion > UP on ground in Elko NVDate: 02/28/24 07:10 UP on ground in Elko NV Author: JDLX UP grain train derailed in Elko (Nevada) early this morning. Location is east end of downtown right in front of Amtrak station, not sure (yet) about possible damage to either Amshack or loading platforms but they are just out of view to the left of the attached picture, which shows many cars on ground and both main lines blocked. Wreck may have damaged the 12th street bridge visible in background, one of two main bridges over the Humboldt and the railroad (and three in town), it is closed pending structural assessment.
Second photo added from Elko Firefighters Association looking east from underneath 12th street bridge. Preliminary reports only, more to follow for sure. Jeff Moore Elko, NV Edited 4 time(s). Date: 02/28/24 09:47 Re: UP on ground in Elko NV Author: sagehen Does that block traffic in both directions?
Stan Praisewater Date: 02/28/24 09:50 Re: UP on ground in Elko NV Author: Cupolau Did nummber 5 already make it through before this occured?
Date: 02/28/24 09:58 Re: UP on ground in Elko NV Author: Cupolau My son and daughter who live in Elko said that it may have happened at the rear of the train, because they could see the pusher unit not to far back and still upright.
Date: 02/28/24 10:02 Re: UP on ground in Elko NV Author: SPB Yes Amtrak #5 was through prior to the derailment, It's now approaching Truckee. Today's esatbound #6 has departed Oakland so expectations must be the line will be cleared for its passage.
Gerry Date: 02/28/24 13:36 Re: UP on ground in Elko NV Author: funnelfan Did this derailment block all routes through Elko, or did UP have a way around it? UP is going to be put in a bad situation if a backup of trains gets caught by the storm hitting the Sierras.
Ted Curphey Ontario, OR Date: 02/28/24 13:56 Re: UP on ground in Elko NV Author: JDLX Derailment is blocking both main lines. Alternate routes are Shasta Route-OR&N-OSL or via Los Angeles and the LA&SL. However, I suspect that the eastbound main is likely to be back in service in the relatively near future, maybe today, they will still have bottlenecks though as the next crossovers west of the derailment site are in Carlin, twenty miles down the road, for however long it takes to get the westbound main cleared and back in service.

Bummer for The Overland. Hate to see it. Chuck Date: 02/28/24 17:40 Re: UP on ground in Elko NV Author: webmaster I notice the left sensor is missing. Perhaps the derailed truck took this out and alerted the crew. Perhaps the process of braking the train sent it piling up.

Date: 02/29/24 08:13 Re: UP on ground in Elko NV Author: JDLX Thursday morning update, eastbound main reopened later yesterday. As noted on the passenger board Amtrak held the 6 three hours in Reno before releasing it. As of this morning all cars had been pulled off the right-of-way, a work train was on westbound main just east of derailment site with excavators pulling track panels off flatcars, train also had ballast cars ready to be dumped. Amtrak 5 right now is holding just east of derailment site, it had to wait for at least one westbound freight to clear the main before it could proceed west on the normally eastbound main as the next crossover west of here is Carlin.
