Chicago: Blommer Chocolate Plant Closing
Author: kevink

What will be the last rail-served a industry on Chicago’s near northwest side is also closing as announced today. The Chicago Tribune’s large printing plant a few blocks north of here is closing this summer.

The plant at DesPlaines and Kinzie is served by UP with spurs on two levels.

I will miss the chocolate aroma that floated across the Loop on occasion.

A couple of photos:
1. Tank car on the lower track along Jefferson Avenue on 8/2/2017. This track is a spur off the line that serves the Trib printing plant.
2. Local serving the upper level on 8/15/2023. This is the elevated approach to Ogilvie Transportation Center. Blommer is to the left of this view looking north from Kinzie Street west of Clinton Street.  Sorry for the upside-down photo.

That hunk of property must be worth an absolute fortune.

They took over the street where the siding was and fenced it all in as part of their parking lot in the last year or so as well.

They closed the retail store during Covid. Too bad, those were some fantastic mated milk balls..

I’m sure the developers are already making their plans. I’m surprised it lasted this long.

Does Blommer have their own line of chocolates, or are they mainly an ingredient supplier to food producers?

Don’t blame me for any chocolate cravings if you do decide to click that link! 😀

There was a RE transfer tax proposal. Maybe had sale already set up and wanted get to done beforehand.

Referendum failed anyway.

Was funny various interests like teachers union, immigrant activists, homeless etc were already putting dibs on the money.

Sorry to read the news about the closure.  When I was working at the C&NW downtown 30 years ago, I would drive to work
on weekends and usually found free parking on the streets by the Blommer plant.  Several streets around there were like a
little free parking oasis that evidently the cash-strapped City was unaware of.  How sweet it was, so to speak.  In addition
to the free parking, enjoying the aroma from the plant was an pleasant bonus.
