Interesting 1x3 power config on Kimball, SD-to-Kalama, WA grainer
Author: jmulhol2

A 114-car westbound loaded unit grain shuttle train in an un-common 1x3 power configuration is seen here thundering past MP1.25 on the BNSF Devils Lake Subdivision during the sunny mid-morning hours of 03/22/2024. This train was originally loaded in the one-way-entrance loop track at the "Gavilon Grain, LLC" grain elevator in Kimball, SD, along the Ringneck & Western Railroad (formerly Dakota Southern Railway). This train is eventually bound for unloading into big grain silos at the "Kalama Export Company, LLC" grain facility in Kalama, WA, along the BNSF Seattle Subdivision. This grain is then likely destined to get loaded onto large dry bulk carrier ships along the Columbia River to take the long westward trek across the Pacific Ocean to the Asian Markets (e.g., Korea, Japan, China, etc.). This train is running what is called "Route B" around these parts, which is where trains take the longer routing between Dilworth, MN/Fargo, ND and Minot, ND via the BNSF Hillsboro Subdivision to the BNSF Devils Lake Subdivision via Grand Forks, ND instead of the more direct routing between Dilworth, MN/Fargo, ND and Minot, ND via the BNSF KO Subdivision. I wonder if this train originally ran empty in a 2x1 power configuration before being loaded and attempting to run in a 1x2 power configuration, eventually having to add the BNSF #7562 to the rear somewhere along its journey to make it a 1x3 power configuration. Perhaps one of two original lead motors now serving as DPUs, the BNSF #8341 or BNSF #4293, went kaput somewhere along the route before this video was taken?

Going down river due to downgrade little power is needed when I lived just across the river next to the BNsf mainline saw it in person one day.  Across the river from Pasco WA come  a loan unit with grain cars behind it not super long like the one sown but still not a short train. It only had one unit on the point exactly how many cars unknown but one which usualy had more than just one unit on it. So would say that one had all the power needed from there down to unloading.
