Colorado Pacific Rio Grande RR News 28 March

Colorado Pacific Rio Grande Railroad leased PRLX 4687 and 4685, SD70M, moved RWIX ex-Amtrak express refrigerator cars to Walsenburg, CO.  Eastbound train with some 30-cars was delayed account an 8-car derailment on La Veta Pass that morning 28 March 2024.  Derailment occurred near milepost 200 west of the lower tunnel.  Only three cars were interchanged to Union Pacific that day.  Mt. Mestas in distance La Veta, Colorado.  The bears on La Veta Pass will have fresh goodies to eat at the derailment site.


1 - Plow on maintenance of way equipment parked at La Veta wye 28 March 2024.

2 - Colorado Pacific Rio Grande Railroad leased power Progress Rail PRLX 3687 arrived La Veta , Colorado, mid afternoon with only three cars after new crew relieved crew that had an 8-car derailment on La Veta Pass that morning.

3 - Progress Rail 3687, SD70M, rolled over Valley Road grade crossing with snow covered Spanish Peaks in background 28 March 2024.  The leased Progress Rail units will be done end of March 2024.  Watch for former BNSF SD70MAC's to take over road trips in the San Luis Valley.

4 - La Veta, Colorado, sign with maintenance of way equipment parked on wye 28 March 2024.

5 - Mule deer graze in the park next to the old station at La Veta, Colorado.

6 - Colorado Pacific Rio Grande Railroad PRLX 4685 picked up covered hoppers from Union Pacific at Walsenburg, Colorado, 28 March 2024.

I think the San Luis Central uses them to ship potatoes out of Monte Vista, CO.
