UP Moffat Tunnel Line Closed - Rock Slide 29 Mar 2024
Author: cozephyr

Union Pacific's Moffat Tunnel line west of Rollinsville, Colorado, closed by rock slide that included 15-foot size boulder-!  Amtrak's Winter Park Express stopped by rock slide and returning to Denver.  Power was moved from West End to East End at Rollinsville Colorado, about 9:15 AM, Friday, 29 March 2024.

Video - NO sound - Amtrak 174, P42DC Phase VII scheme, exited Union Pacific's tunnel 1 near Plainview, Colorado, with the Winter Park Express, train 1105.  Train turned back to Denver after a rock slide blocked the line at milepost 44.6 west of Rollinsville, CO.

Did it happen in an area that has a slide detector fence?  That would be the ideal way of finding out a slide has occured.  The worst way, of course, would be to have a train come upon it, especially at night.  That doesn't always turn out so well.

I don't believe there's any slide fences there. For the last 10 -14 days I've heard the slide fences just west of Plain going off intermittently so I can't say I;m surprised....

Yes, there is a slide fence in that area of milepost 44.

Yikes!  Mother nature wins again.  Bummer for the Ski Train and Zephyr passengers.

I see Wiley Coyote's tail under the rocks, and msns2557 says the Road Runner is there as well.

Jokes aside glad no one was hurt. Ben
