🎼 We're A Great Big Banging Railroad 🎼 !
Author: RailRat

I'm sure these cars are probably destined for the TTX repair facility at Mira Loma off Van Buren and Ettiwanda, But the conductor or brakeman in this scene is surly earned his beer for the day tonight! One or two very "flat tire" wheels can be definitely heard here.

Sure does sound like they have some square wheels on those cars. Probably got dragged across the basin with the handbrake tied when it was loaded.

Could you imagine what it was like for that (conductor)? to be standing on that car, watching out for crazy cars at xings plus crazy people trespassing on the tracks, plus the constant bumping of that flat wheel too?

Also I've always wondered where this Riverside job destination goes East/North to drop off/Pick up its cars.
It doesn't seem to take very long for round trip.
Plus the head end power is always on the same end, always pulling railroad east, and always shoving heading railroad west.

In my younger days, I would have jumped at the chance to ride like that!  Now, I'd probably pass.  :)

Power hides at the Arlington "Yard" and they pick up and drop their cars at Mira Loma.

Nice video catch, and yes, I also am thinking hand brake tied down tight while being switched/spotted.

I live near the southern end of the shasta route north of Roseville CA and always see tons of mty beams going back north, and I swear every other 1 of those cars I hear go by has square wheels. Those things always bang like no joke. One time I asked an ex railroader buddy of mine if he knew anything about why those things are so loud and he said often times they just get dragged around at lumber yards.

Thanks PHall, I've seen them shoving to Mira Loma several times, But I'm not sure where they pick up/drop off when they head east/north towards Riverside Jct. Do they go to all the way to W. Colton?

I had two cousins (they were brothers) who were rabid railfans and we all lived in St. Louis.  Early days of WWII they would hitchhike SW on Hwy 66 to Rolla or therabouts on the Frisco. (my Dad, their Uncle John) was a Frisco engineer.  They would hop a freight coming east and come back home.
One day they found an oil train in the passing track (common during the war before the pipelines) and climbed up on the end of a tank car and strapped themselves to the handrail on the end of the tank.
Pretty soon the meet was made and the engineer whistled off.  As soon as they hit 5-10MPH they found out the the truck under their end of the car had a flat wheel.  By the time they would have unstrapped themselves it was already going too fast so they had to ride that for 80 miles at track speed, which was 60 in spots.  Sounded like a machine gun.
Neither could hear for about 3 days and my Dad found out and gave them both a good ass chewing.
Before diesels, so they probably had cinders to deal with too.

The farthest I've seen them go lately is the lumber yards in Riverside near Iowa and Citrus and Palmyrita Ave. You can get a good view of them from the Iowa Ave overpass. That's where the centerbeams are going.
